Staines Wargamers are a fairly light hearted lot who meet every Friday evening from 7pm to 11pm
at the Thameside Community Centre,
Langley Road, Staines.
This was a pretty good venue until the local youth arts group got hold of the place; now it's not
at its best, but has sufficient tables and other amenities to keep us satisfied.
We generally aim to have two or three multi-player games running of an evening, each game being
organised by one or two of the members. Current favourite rules sets and scales are:
World War Two, using "WWII Tac" in 20mm. Between us we can rustle up forces from a
number of different theatres and periods. Early war France/England and the Russian Front tend to be the most popular.
The American Civil War, using 'Fire and Fury', in 15mm, 10mm or 6mm.
'Principles of War', a variety of 19th century conflicts are played using these rules;
periods we have covered include the War of 1859, The Great Paraguayan War, The Zulu War, The Sudan,
The Boer War, The Crimean War, The Mexican Adventure, The First World War, and The Russian Civil War.
Mainly played in 15mm. The Napoleonic version of the rules get a regular airing as well.
The American War of independence, using 'Loose Files and American Scramble', Andy
Callan's set of rules for published many years ago in 'Wargames Illustrated', now available on the web.
Again, played in 15mm. We have modifications which allow them to be used for the War of 1812 and
the US/Mexican War as well. We have also used "On to Philadephia" another unpublished ruleset.
Ancients, using 'Ancient Warfare', 'Conquerors & Kings' and 'Warmaster Ancients'.
A variety of armies are in use, all in 15mm.
Medieval, using home grown rules, 'Poleaxed' and 'Medieval Warfare'. In 15 and 10mm.
Napoleonic Naval warfare, using 'Form Line of Battle', a excellent rule set now in
its fourth version, produced by A&A games. Very easy to play and great fun. We use 1/1200th scale
ships, but then who doesn't ?
'Volley and Bayonet', a set of rules for brigade level actions 1700-1900. We use
them for the Franco-Prussian War, American Civil War and the Marlburian wars but other periods
are begining to get a look-in as well.
'Plus Many home grown rules', Such periods as WWI naval action, Ancient Naval, Spanish
Civil War, Fantasy, Victorian Science Fiction, etc. etc. See the Rules section of this site for
a look at some of them.
At Least once a year we try to hold a big all-day game, usually at the same venue. Some accounts
and pictures of recent games can be seen on the "Galleries" page.
The club has been around for a number of years, and tries to put on a participation game at
various games shows, usually in the South East, though we have ventured as far North as Sheffield.
A number of these have found their way into the magazines; '55 Minutes at Peking' and 'Fire on
the Lake' for example. Others include 'Stagecoach', "Death or Dishonour", "Tarawa", "Thunderball"
and "The charge of the Light Brigade".
There is a mailing list to allow members of the club to keep in touch:
