The Staines Wargamers' Khambula Demonstration Game
March 5th 2000

These pictures are of a demonstration game we put on at KillerCon 2000, at Royal Holloway College, March 4th and 5th 2000. We used 'Principles of War' to stage a rough refight of the Zulu War battle of Khambula, which took place on 29th March 1879. The British were occupying a defensive position on a series of low hills, consisting of a wagon laager, a redoubt and a small cattle corral.

Each position was occupied by infantry, with the redoubt having a gatling gun as well. Artillery occupied the ground between the laager and the redoubt, and mounted infantry roamed the battlefield. The position suffered in that there were areas of dead ground which the Zulus could use to advance free from British fire, as well as covered positions they could use to bring the defenders under rifle fire. Historically the Zulu attacks were repulsed; the refight went somewhat differently.

The battle went well for the Zulus, in that they were able to keep the British under constant pressure, advancing right up to the corral and redoubt despite coming under heavy fire. The defenders of these positions put up stiff resistance, and held up the Zulu attack for some time, but they were eventually overwhelmed. This left the Zulus free to attack the laager from three sides at once, and under such pressure the defences soon crumpled. The only survivors were the mounted infantry, who were outside the defensive position and able to flee the victorious Zulus.

The figures were 20mm; a lot of Escii plastics for the Zulus and redcoats, as well as some metals from ... well ... I don't know. All of the figures are from the collection of Paul Carson.

The pictures below were taken by Tony Cane. The only lighting was that in the room, and the flash on the camera, which explains why some are a little dark.
